WHAT MAKES
JIU JITSU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MARTIAL ARTS?
Most other martial arts rely predominantly on speed, power, and strength for self-defense. While important, Jiu Jitsu integrates the use of leverage, reaction, and balance. Therefore, students learn how to use an attacker’s strength and force against them to finish a fight. Additionally, using grappling type movements which are combined with takedowns to control an opponent through holds. As well as pins, and counters to ultimately finish the confrontation by submission.
Chiefly, Jiu Jitsu has established itself as a superior martial art for self-defense and within professional fighting due to its effectiveness. Not only do we empower you and or your child with effective skills and techniques we emphasize the responsibility that comes with such knowledge.
WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?
I was looking for martial arts for my daughter (4yo, 2022). She tried it, loved it, and we’ve been here ever since. She loves training with kids her age and building a solid rapport with her partners and coaches. I believe this will make a strong and positive impact on her life. After seeing her first class, I decided to try it for myself. Professor Scott was encouraging throughout the hour-long class. My training partners took it easy on me but quickly reminded me how well they could fold the clothes I was wearing… with me in them! I wanted to know the secret ways. This was also a “life support” for my personal wellbeing when I needed it the most. Couldn’t be more thankful for the community. If you’re looking for a new skill to learn at 4 or 40 years old… this is the place to do it. All the coaches provide excellent instruction and feedback on and off the mats. Safe & welcoming classes. Clean & sanitized mats. Change rooms, showers, and ample parking!

I recently moved to Calgary and tried several gyms before finding YYC. It is an excellent place with excellent teachers and very kind people who are always looking to make you feel good. Additionally, a fairly large and united women's team was started with an exclusive class during the week.

Joined YYC BJJ after many years away from the sport. Wasn't sure what to expect because I know sometimes gyms can be full of ego and it's hard to find your spot in the mix. YYC BJJ has been nothing but amazing. Incredible group of talented and supportive classmates and coaches. Highly recommend it!!

Coaches Scott and Shae demonstrate both patience and eagerness in their teachings and willingness to communicate to you. They work diligently to ensure you are receiving a clean and friendly environment, and give it a one-hundred-and-ten percent effort, one hundred percent of the time. There’s also open mat and seasonally other arts like Muay Thai so you can diversify your skills once in a while. What ended up being primarily going there to learn self-defense turned into going for an environment of comradery where everyone is nurturing each other to improve and grow together. Don’t be afraid to come here if you are a first timer, it will be a struggle at first but like myself, everyone perseveres through it shortly and it becomes one of the most fun sports in your life with the help of Coaches Scott, Shae and other assistant coaches. There are no secrets in Jiu Jitsu here. I highly recommend YYC BJJ!

WHY BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU was developed to enable an individual to overcome a larger opponent without engaging in strikes or kicks. The principles of leverage are applied to weaker points in the body like joints, creating an asymmetrical advantage for those trained in Jiu Jitsu.
This means that children trained in Jiu Jitsu can end a fight quickly without inflicting or suffering damaging blows, and with a much lower risk of hurting themselves.
